teen room update

A few weeks ago I shared this design board  for my daughter’s room with you.   We had a chance to go shopping that following weekend, also known as payday :)  to get some of the things on our list.  I decided to make a fun girl’s day out of it and to capture it on video.  I don’t have the capability to embed.  So, I’m providing the links to each little video.  Just click on the title to watch.  They are all very short.   Enjoy!

Girl’s Day- Successful Shopping

We’ve been able to incorporate most of what was on the design board by using  what we already had.  So far, we’ve only purchased the comforter with matching sham and the window sheers.  Here’s a closer look at the bedding.

The room will be complete after we paint the walls and hang the rest of the posters, pictures, etc.  I intend on getting poster frames for the posters. Oh, and I can’t forget the black chandy…it’s on the list too.

Until next time,

Sharon

living rich on less at the hines house-

Last week when I featured susan’s beautiful buffet decor, I mentioned that I love it so much that I was inspired to create my own version.  Susan wrote to say she hoped I would show y’all my version…So, this post is dedicated to Susan at Living Rich on Less.

To refresh your memory, this is Susan’s buffet decor

I just love the sparkly, simple elegance of this vignette.

I don’t have the space for a full-sized buffet, but I still wanted a surface to be able to have a pair of lamps in the dining room.  This past summer, I bought a console from Hobby Lobby.  It was on sale, and with my gift card, I only paid $30 for it.  Not bad..

My lamps were in the garage in the donate pile until l found some pretty, new ivory lamp shades for $5 each at TJ Maxx.  Now I love the lamps.

I like that the lamp base coordinates with my Ballard’s knock off mirror.

And, since my console is so much smaller than a buffet, I had to improvise on the hurricane vases.

Working with items that I already had, I turned a pair of crystal candle stick holders upside down.  Then placed a votive holder on top.

For the greenery, I’m using an artificial ivy that I’ve had for awhile.

It will do for now, but I would like to replace it with a live plant.

Put all of the elements together, and here is my version of Susan’s buffet vignette.

Thanks for the inspiration, Susan!

How have you been inspired by other bloggers?

Sharon

there’s no place like home

Isn’t this home beautiful?  I’m a big time fan of front porches.  Patios are nice, but front porches make my heart sing.  “Wild thing, you make my heart sing”…sorry, couldn’t resist.

{source}

Yes, please.  :)

I need to stop daydreaming.  The only way this could ever happen, and on a much smaller scale, is if  I go back to work.  And right now, I’m “not gonna do it.”  That’s my impression of Dana Carvey impersonating George Bush, Sr. ;0

Y’all recognize this one?

It’s the rear exterior of the Ewing home from the t.v. series Dallas.  That was not a happy home.

{source}

I’ve been thinking about homes, the nature of a home, and what makes a house a home.  So, I looked up the definition online.  thefreedictionary. com defines it this way:

home  (hm) n.

1. A place where one lives; a residence.
2. The physical structure within which one lives, such as a house or apartment.
3. A dwelling place together with the family or social unit that occupies it; a household.
4.
a. An environment offering security and happiness.

b. A valued place regarded as a refuge or place of origin.

Number 4 stood out to me as the one that we are all striving after…the one that we blog about…the reason that we do all the thrifting, decorating, crafting, cooking and photo taking.
So, during the month of February, I’m going to be doing a series on “Making a House a Home”.  Every Thursday, I will post on a different topic:

~If Momma Ain’t Happy: putting priorities in order
~Taking a Trip Down Memory Lane: remembering traditions
~The Kids Are Alright: the structured home
~There’s No Place Like Home: decorating for your lifestyle

The series will end in a link party on Wednesday, February 29th.
Is there anything else you would like me to cover in this series?  Would you like to do a guest post for this series?    If so, just shoot me an email or message me on facebook.

Until next time,

DIY chalkboard and framing

~Make your own chalkboard

1) Buy a piece of masonite board from a craft store.  I purchased mine from Michael’s.  I chose the size based on the frame that I was going to use with my chalkboard.

2) Purchase some chalkboard paint.  You can buy it as a spray can or paint can.  It is sold as craft stores, home improvement stores and Walmart.  If you buy the paint can, you will also need a paint brush or small roller with a low nap.

{source}

3) Follow the directions on the paint for painting your masonite board.

4) Be sure to season your board by rubbing it with the side of your chalk.  Once you erase the chalk, your chalkboard is ready to use.

{Source}

5) If you prefer, you can write with chalk paint pens found at craft stores.

{Source}

~ Frame your own art

Need to frame the chalkboard you just made?  Here are the step by step directions.

1) Use an open back frame you have around the house or purchase one.

{source}

2) Lay the frame face down and place your art inside; also face down.

3) Attach framing clips around the artwork by tapping the sharp end into the frame.  The rest of the clip will hold the picture in place.

4) Once your picture is secure in the frame, attach hanging hardware to the back of the frame.

5) If you use hanging wire, be sure that the top of the wire does not show above the frame when pulled up.

Beautiful Buffet

I’ve finally settled on what to put on my buffet.  There was nothing wrong with what was there.

It just wasn’t me.

I’d been waiting to decorate the buffet for Debbiedoo’s Magazine Copycat Challenge  until one day, I “let go” of the notion that  keeping this vignette full time wouldn’t work because it wasn’t “real”…  just something pretty to look at and served no function at all.

Here’s the magazine inspiration.

Pardon the wrinkles. They come from years of sitting in my idea binder.   I’ve had this page for so long that I can’t remember where it came from, but it is possibly Cottage Living.

I LOVE it!  There is nothing wrong with appreciating something simply for its beauty.  In fact, it’s a good thing.

So, out with the old

and in with the new!

This diy chalkboard is very easy to make.

Finally, the magazine picture isn’t a “some day” source waiting in my idea binder, but a reality!

What realities have you made happen lately?

Until next time,

Sharon

My word, features and reminder

We don’t visit Granny as much as we should, but when we do, I cozy up on the corner of the couch with a few copies of her Guidepost magazine and read through the articles.  Well, one day I mysteriously started receiving my own subscription of Guidepost in the mail.  Hmmmm, wonder where that came from?  :)  It’s been several years, and my subscription keeps coming.  A couple of months ago, one of my favorite authors, Debbie Macomber, was featured on the front cover.  I was anxious to read her story.  This is when I first heard of someone choosing a word to focus on, and study, and kind of own, for the new year.  Debbie said she sometimes chose words that would just keep poppin’ up…like in songs, in a sermon, in a conversation.  So, I started watching for a word.  Joy.  I kept seeing it over and over and hearing it in songs…but, it felt a little forced.  Of course the word was everywhere.  It was Christmas!  I started over on my search for a word.  This time,  just listening for a word that would be whispered from within.  Content.  I looked it up.  There were a few definitions but the one that resonated with me was this: “peace of mind, mental or emotional satisfaction.”

source

One night last week, I had asked my daughter to tell me her opinion of my latest redesign.  She asked, “Mom, when are you going to just be happy with the way things are and stop moving them around?”   “I don’t know,”  I answered.

source

But, that’s not entirely true.  I know that when I decorate with things that I love, that are sentimental and that truly reflect our family, I am satisfied; content,  and I don’t feel the need to start all over.  There’s a part of me that wants to be “done” with decorating my home.  Now, with that being said, I just read an article on how being content doesn’t mean settling and never changing.  One thing I need to learn to be content about is that I am a creative person who is always looking for my next project.  I have to create in order to be fulfilled.  So, in that sense something will always be changing.  It is going to be an interesting and challenging year as I learn to be content.

source

Speaking of content, there is nothing more satisfying than a job well done.  Let’s take a look at some of the projects from last week’s Show & Tell party.

First we have, Peggy’s birds of a feather pillow.

She did an amazing job on this pillow.  I absolutely love it!

Next, take a look at Kirsty’s gorgeous table setting.

It’s calling my name!

And lastly, I was very impressed with Jen’s faux fireplace.

The addition of the board and trim above the mantel is so beautiful!

This week’s Show & Tell party goes live at midnight tonight.  I can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to!  See you there!

Chili Recipe and Desserts

I love cookin’, and I love hostin’.  Today, I got to do both since we had friends over to watch the Texans play off game.  It was a good time of food and fellowship.

Our menu:

Appetizers: chips and salsa, crackers with your choice of hummus or cream cheese topped with raspberry chipotle sauce, roasted almonds and stufffed jalapenos

Soup of the day: potato leek

Main Course: Chili served over your choice of white rice or fritos and shredded cheddar cheese

Dessert: poor man’s turtles, and vanilla ice cream served in hollowed apples and topped with caramel.

Our friends brought the soup and the stuffed jalapenos which were great additions to the meal!  The appetizers are pretty self explanatory.  So, I will be sharing my chili recipe with you today.  I will also include a quick how-to on the poor man’s turtles and the hollowed apples.

First up…the chili.  I’ve been making chili for years.  The recipe has evolved a little from my mom’s recipe to my own.  Once when looking for inspiration, I googled Paula Deen’s chili recipe, and it turned out our recipes were very similar.  In fact, the only difference is that she includes corn.  So, I was pretty proud of myself for coming up with a recipe that was so close to someone so known for her cooking.  Now, in my best Paula Deen impression, and it’s a really good one since you can’t hear me ;) , “Mmmm…y’all, it’s so good.”   Thanks for humoring me.

Chili Recipe

Ingredients:

1 lb. of ground chuck- ground chuck is 80/20 on fat content which is why I like it.  You can buy leaner meat if you prefer.

1 green bell pepper

1 white onion

2 cloves of garlic

1 can diced tomatoes

1 can rotel–I use mild

2 cans ranch style beans

2 TBSP of chili powder

1 TBSP of cumin

Preparation:

Brown the ground meat over medium high heat.  While the meat is browning, chop up the onion, pepper and garlic.  Once meat is browned, scoot it over to one side of the pan and saute the vegetables in the fat.

Drain fat

Add diced tomatoes and the next four ingredients.  Stir well to mix up all of the ingredients.  Bring chili to a bubble over medium high heat.  Once bubbling, reduce heat to medium low and cover to simmer.  Let simmer for about 30 minutes.

Serves 8

How to make Poor Man’s Turtles:

Now, just in case you haven’t heard of poor man’s turtles, you shouldn’t be deprived any longer.  They are so easy to make, very addicting and always a crowd pleaser.  You will need a bag of mini pretzels (the knotted kind, not the sticks), a bag of rolos and a bag of pecan halves.  Preheat oven to 250 degrees.  Lay out pretzels on baking sheet that has been greased.  Top pretzels with a rolo.  Place in oven for 3 minutes. After you take them out of the oven, immediately press pecan halves into rolo.  The rolo will not look melted, but it is, and it will spread out and cover the pretzel.  Place in refrigerator to chill.  Once they are chilled, they are ready to eat.

How to hollow out an apple:

~ wash apples ( you will need one apple per person)

~cut top off of apple

~ use a spoon or melon baller to scoop out apple leaving about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of apple to serve as a bowl.

~If you are not serving right away, sprinkle with a little lemon to keep from browning and place apple top back on.  Keep in refrigerator until you are ready to scoop ice cream.

~when you are ready for dessert, fill each apple bowl with vanilla ice cream and top with caramel

Enjoy!  It’s fun to eat the apple bowl once your ice cream is all gone.

If you try any of these recipes, I’d love to hear about it!

Until next time,

Sharon
